VINTAGE Kart Race August 17-20th.
well some of you got to see the old days of Karting last weekend,. Those who made it saw somew of the legends of Karting, and the karts used "in the day". THose of you who didn't missed a gre4at event . It was a llaid back event with practice on Friday, all day, until 5 PM, and more practice on Saturday with two heats of the "classes".
Sunday the lkast day of racing, with the final of the heats run then.
Saturday, Jr. Neal got into Pearl Gamble around turns 8 and 9, and Pearl came back Sunday from the hospital with his arm in a sling. Sorry about your luck Pearl.
It brought back memories to me, not of races past, but of Racers passed. The old engines reminded me of passed builders like DeVoe Turrpin, who built Gene Stemphley's 820's, and Bob Jefferies who was one of the premier builders of Kenny Burden's C-Open rigs using McCullough engines as a base. Bob Wise who lived in Xenia, and Bill Hall of Englewood. Kart builders like Mickey Rupp, still alive, and Jerry Solt of SAE fame. He made the lightest kart ever, about 80# with an engine.
If you were there you got to see how much the driving styles have changes over the years. Lap times have gone down, some, and the karts handle in the turns, unilke the old ones. C-Open let off before the start finish line, mostly because they were a bear in the corners, with nearly 100 Hp to the rear wheels, they had a tendancy to step out, in the turns if you romped on the throttle.
Bill McCornak was also there with magazines that featurd the Nationals for IKF in 1969 and 1971, complete with pictures, including the Monza. I even saw muself and Skip Petterson, of the Dayton Dailly News, doing the announcing. I had completely forgotten he was there. Senior Moment!
It brought back a lot of memories, good ones.
If you weren't there, I am sorry that you missed it.
Had to re-edit this thing because of my darn fat fingers.
